Just weeks after announcing the £44.1m “first round” of its Series B funding, digital business banking service Tide has appointed a new chief technology officer.

Guy Duncan, the former CTO of BMW’s digital transformation arm and before that CTO of payment group PayU, will oversee all of Tide’s development going forward.

“I see the digitisation of banking as still in its infancy,” said Duncan on his appointment.

“Our key focus for Tide will be applying clever technology, such as machine learning, to the platform. This can help remove the pain points for customers of banking and admin for small businesses in a scalable manner.”

Earlier this month Tide announced “one of the largest Series B rounds ever secured by a UK fintech company” according to CEO Oliver Prill, who added further funding would be announced by the end of 2019.

In recent weeks Tide has greatly expanded the scope of its business into lending with the launch of Tide Capital, subscription services with the arrival of Tide Plus, and web-based signups.

“Guy will bring a huge amount of passion, energy and experience to Tide,” said Prill.

“His experience at BMW’s Connected Company means he has worked with top-tier technology, specifically cloud-based infrastructure and Machine Learning, and has successfully managed large teams in an Agile manner.”

Prill added that Duncan’s work will also be focused on preparing Tide’s codebase for international expansion.
