Starling Bank has announced today that it is to open up its third office in the UK in Cardiff.

Following the move, the office will allow the digital bank to grow its data science, fraud and customer service teams, creating 400 new jobs.

Just over a year ago Starling’s competitor Monzo announced they would be opening an office in Wales.

The move means that the fierce digital bank competitors will have their Welsh offices at opposite ends of the same street.

Anne Boden, CEO and founder of Starling Bank and Welsh native, said: “The Welsh tech sector is one of the fastest digital economies outside of London, and continues to grow”.

“We believe that London’s success as a fintech hub should enable it to spread wealth and jobs throughout the UK and the wider economy”.

Starling has over 800 employees in its offices in London and Southampton and has 1.3 million customers across the UK.

Ken Stakes, Economy, Transport and North Wales Minister, said: “Our thriving FinTech ecosystem has seen a number of companies make the move to Wales following Welsh Government advice and support, and it’s fantastic Starling has decided to do the same, creating 400 new jobs with more to come”.

“As a government, we can be rightly proud of our role in growing the financial and related professional services sector in what is a very competitive global business environment.”

Starling has had a strong start to 2020 with them recently launching a second TV advert, raising £60m for overseas growth and introducing new features, such as cheque scanning.
